Charles William Elvidge was born in Woodmansey, the son of John William and Eliza Hannah Elvidge. The family moved to Beverley before 1891 and by 1901 were living on Grovehill Road.
Charles was working as a general labourer, when he enlisted in the 1st Battalion the Kings Royal Rifle Corp in 1905. He married Rose Marwood on 9 June 1915 at St Johns, Newington, he was described as a private in the Kings Royal Rifle Corps.
Whilst a member of the 9th Battalion KRRC he was declared missing in the Battle of Bellewarde Farm on 25 Sep 1915. His body was never recovered, he was declared killed in action. He is remembered on the Menin Gate, Ypres. Charles was awarded the 14 star, the Victory medal and the British medal.
Charles is commemorated on the Woodmansey War Memorial and on the Beverley War Memorial, Hengate.
