Robert Elliott was born in Hornsea the 3 Dec 1898, the son of Henry Elliott and Mary Elizabeth, who married in Hornsea in 1893. The family moved to Beverley in the 1890s. Henry was a farm labourer, later working for Beverley Rural District Council. The family lived in Sloe Lane, Beverley. On leaving school Robert worked as an errand boy, he joined the Beverley Church Lads’ Brigade from Dec 1912 to Jun 1914. He was said to be of “very good character” but of a “quiet disposition”. He left the CLB in 1914 when he found work in Hornsea.

Robert enlisted in Jun 1917, serving with the 12th Battalion of the Yorkshire Regiment (Teeside Pioneers), he was transferred to the 5th Battalion of the West Riding Regiment, possibly in May 1918. Robert served in France and reached the rank of Corporal. He left the Army in Oct 1919 and was awarded the War and Victory Medals.

Robert returned to Beverley, living with his parents in 1925. He married Ethel Anne Smith at Hornsea Wesleyan Methodist Church on the 25 Oct 1928. In 1939 they were living at 3 Marlborough Avenue, Hornsea. Robert was working as a bar manager. He died aged 47 in 1947.
