DescriptionWork completed by volunteer includes the following information:

George William Dayes was born 7 Sep 1892 in St Andrew Street, Beverley, the eldest son of Herbert Dayes, a tanners labourer, and his wife Harriet. He was christened at Beverley Minster on 19 May 1893, and later lived in Lairgate when his father became a fish merchant. His father died at the age of 33 when George was only 11 years old, and at the age of 18 George was working as a cowman on a farm at Hotham.

George enlisted in the West Yorkshire Regiment, serving with the 2nd Battalion which became part of the 23rd Brigade of the 8th Division, embarking for France in Mar 1915. George died 1 Jul 1916, the first day of the Battle of Albert - the day that proved to be the most costly single day in British military history. He is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial and is remembered on the Beverley Church Lads' Brigade Roll of Honour.
