Herbert Dosser was born in 1896 and baptised at St Mary’s Church, Beverley the 15 Jun 1896, the son of William and Annie Dosser, of 9 Dog and Duck Lane, Beverley. By 1911 Herbert was working as an errand boy for a local grocer but on 17 Apr 1914 he signed on for 12 years’ service in the Royal Navy. He served as a stoker on Victory II, Empress of India, Courageous, and Ergmont II. He was awarded the 1914-15 Star, the Victory Medal and British War Medal.
Herbert left the Navy in 1926, he married Fanny Hudson of Pocklington in Oct 1936, they had a son John William Herbert Dosser born Oct 1937. Fanny, John and Fanny’s mother are listed as living on Holme Road, Market Weighton in 1939, Herbert is not listed as he may have been called into the Royal Naval Reserve, his navy record showed he joined the reserve after discharge.
Herbert died on 24 Apr 1959 and left his widow Fanny effects valued at £1,090.
