Robert was born in Anlaby on 23 Aug 1892 the son of William Dunn, a railway worker, and his wife Mary Jane. In 1911, aged 18, Robert was employed as a beastman at Home Farm, Hesslewood, Hessle, and in 1915 he married Elizabeth Williamson, one of the daughters of Mark and Jane Williamson of Beverley. Robert’s occupation was listed as cowman.
The medal rolls and his personal medal index card show Robert was a Private in the West Riding Regiment (the Duke of Wellington’s Regiment) and that he was awarded the British War and Victory medals. The regimental medal rolls also show that he was demobilised and transferred to the ‘Z’ Reservists in Feb 1919. A photograph of Robert appeared in the Beverley Guardian dated 12 Apr 1919, with the notation that he served in the Duke of Wellington’s Regiment.
The Electoral Rolls for Hull show Robert and Elizabeth living in Oak Road, Hull in 1920, the 1939 Register shows them still living in Oak Road, in the “Works Bungalow”, and Robert employed as a Foreman, Oil Refinery Glycerine Distillery. Robert and Elizabeth do not appear to have had any children and an obituary published in the Hull Daily Mail announced the death of Elizabeth, aged 50 years, 'the dearly loved wife of Robert L Dunn, after a long illness patiently borne, on 15 Sep 1941, at the Bungalow, Oak Road, Newland'.
Robert remarried in 1943. His second wife was Elizabeth’s younger unmarried sister, Edith. At the time of his death he was resident in Sheriff Hutton, he died on 9 Mar 1960, at St. Mary’s Hospital, York. Probate was granted to his widow, Edith.
