Thomas Henry the second son of Herbert and Harriet Dayes, was born Nov 1896 and was baptised at Beverley Minster on 8 Dec 1896. In 1901 the family was living in Lairgate and his father was a fish dealer. In 1903 when Thomas was 6 years old his father died, aged 33. In 1911 Thomas, aged 14, was living and working on a farm at Willerby, he was employed as a ‘cow boy’.
In May 1915 he enlisted in the Ammunition Column of the Royal Field Artillery and embarked for France in Dec 1915. He served throughout the war in France in the 32nd Division of the RFA. returning home in Apr 1919 and was finally discharged in Mar 1920. He was awarded the British War and Victory medals and the 15 Star.
While on leave in 1918 Thomas married Florence Jessie Drewery on 14 February in Hotham Parish Church. Florence was the daughter of George and Fanny Drewery who lived in Green Lane, Hotham. Thomas and Florence had three children, George Henry, Margaret H, and Brian. Brian was born and died in 1936. The 1939 Register shows Thomas and Florence with George Henry and, presumably, Margaret, living in Rimswell Grove, Hull. Thomas was employed as a public works contractor’s labourer, and Florence as an assistant clinic nurse with the ARP.
Florence died in 1974, aged 76, and Thomas died in 1979, aged 83.
