Ted Danby was born in Beverley 23 Jun 1892 and baptised at St Mary’s Church 7 Sep 1892, the son of Slater Danby and his wife Martha (nee Bradley). Slater had a tailoring business in the town but Ted served an apprenticeship and qualified as a hairdresser. His business was at 30 Saturday Market,. he lived on the premises.

Ted enlisted in Beverley on 5 Dec 1915 and was called up for service on 29 Feb 1916, initially joining the 7th Battalion of the York and Lancaster Regiment. He later joined the 6th Battalion. He went to France on 27 Dec 1916. During his training he qualified as a sniper at Northern Command Training School. He was promoted to Lance Corporal during this period and in late 1917 was further promoted to Corporal. The 6th served in France 1917-18. Ted was shot and badly wounded on 11 Oct 1918, only rejoining the 6th on Christmas Day of that year. He was demobilised whilst on home leave in Jan 1919. He received the War and Victory Medals.

Ted resumed his hairdressing career and is recorded in Kelly’s Directory for Beverley in 1921. In 1921 Ted married Dorothy Bowser, their only child, Joyce was born in 1924. Ted died of unknown causes in early Aug 1923 and was buried at the Queensgate Cemetery on 22 Aug 1923.
