Charles was born 1879 in Bridlington, his family moved to Beverley in 1890, living first in Railway Terrace and then in Lurk Lane. Charles was the oldest of eight children. On 18 Jan 1904 at Beverley Minster, he married Violet Eleanor Megson of Minster-Moorgate whose father was a coach smith. They lived at 9 Regent Street. Before enlistment Charles worked as a porter at Beverley railway station, following in the footsteps of his father, George. Charles’ mother, Mary, was responsible for the First Class Ladies Waiting Room at the station before the war.
Charles enlisted in Beverley the 11 Dec 1915 at the age of 36. He was originally assigned to the East Yorkshire Regiment but on 18 Jun 1916 he joined the South Staffordshire Regiment. His records are not very clear but it seems that he joined the 12th Labour Battalion, the Battalion was given over to those men considered unfit for frontline duties. On 14 May 1917 he joined the newly formed Labour Corps Charles served in the 186th Labour Company and then in the 213th Miscellaneous Trade Company. He left the army in Dec 1918 and was awarded the War and Victory Medals.
After the war Charles resumed his job as porter at the station, working for the LNER. He died in June 1935 and was buried at Queensgate Cemetery on 11 June. Violet died in Mar 1956
