Walter Stuart Dunn was born Sep 1894, the son of George Dunn, a stationary engine driver, and his wife Cordelia (nee Taylor). Walter began his education at St. Mary's Boys' School where he gained a scholarship and for four years attended the Beverley Grammar School. He was among the first boys to join the Beverley Church Lads' Brigade, and was a member from 1908 to 1912. After leaving school he became an assistant to Mr P S Newbound, Estate Agent, of North Ferriby.
He enlisted in the East Yorkshire Regiment 8 Sep 1914 and trained at Pocklington, Ripon and Salisbury. He embarked to Egypt in December 1915.Walter transferred to the Army Cyclist Corps, and finally to the 11th Battalion, East Lancashire Regiment and served with the Expeditionary Force in France and Flanders from Spring 1915, where according to a report in the Beverley Guardian he was wounded three times and once gassed. He was injured on 21 Oct 1917 and died of his wounds in hospital, on 24 Oct. His Commanding Officer wrote to Walter's parents "Since he came to my company a few months ago he has proved himself again and again a splendid soldier in every way"
He was awarded the British War and Victory medals and the 15 Star.
Walter was buried in the Duisans British Cemetery, Etrun, and is remembered on the Beverley War Memorial. His name also appears on the Roll of Honour of the Beverley Company of the Church Lads' Brigade. The names of all Brigade members who died in battle are read out in a special ceremony which is held in the Beverley CLB Headquarters each year on Armistice Sunday prior to the Brigade taking part in a Church Parade
