George Herbert Dunn was born in 1890, in Hornsea, the youngest of six children born to George Dunn, a gardener, and his wife Isabella. In 1911 aged 21, and unmarried, he was employed by Owen Owen in their Liverpool department store, working as a Drapers Assistant, and was resident in the company's hostel situated in Stafford Street, Liverpool.

George served in the 1st Battalion of the Coldstream Guards. His medal card shows that he embarked for France on 15 Aug 1915. On 25 Aug 1915, the 1st Battalion was transferred to the 2nd (Guards) Brigade, and in Oct 1915 the brigade took part in the Battle of Loos and Hohenzollern Redoubt. In Sep 1916 the brigade fought in the later stages of the Battle of the Somme, in particular the Battle of Flers-Courcelette.

From information provided by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, it is known that George was killed in action on 16 Sep, 1916, at the age of 26, during the Battle of Flers-Courcelette, and he is "Remembered with Honour", on the Thiepval Memorial. He was awarded the British War and Victory medals and the 15 Star.

He is commemorated on the memorial in the Hornsea Garden of Remembrance, and also, as a member of the Wesleyan Church, on the Wesleyan Roll of Honour in Hornsea.
