Description | Work completed by volunteer includes the following information:
Arthur Collinson was born in Beverley on January 30th1893 and baptised at St Mary’s on March 16th of that year. He was one of twelve children born to Francis Collinson (1864-1928) and his wife Elizabeth (1866-1948) (nee Hogg). Francis was tenant of the White Horse Inn on Hengate from 1888 until 1928 when he bought the pub from the church authorities. It was later run by Arthur’s sister, Nellie Collinson (1894-1975), a well-known local figure and after whom the pub was nicknamed “Nellies”. Arthur became a clerk at Maxwell and Son, corn, seed and manure merchants of North Bar Within, before the outbreak of war. He was unmarried.
Arthur served as a driver in the 32nd Hull Divisional Ammunition Column tasked with bringing ammunition up to the front line from supply dumps. Arthur’s brother Timothy Collinson (1896-1960) also served as a driver with the DAC. Timothy enlisted in Hull on April 22nd 1915. Timothy’s army number was L/14827 whilst that of Arthur was L/14826; this suggests that not only did they enlist together but served together on the Western Front.
Arthur arrived in France on December 30th 1915. As reported in the Hull Daily Mail of December 13th 1917, Arthur was badly wounded (probably by German artillery shelling) whilst taking ammunition up to the guns. He was sent to the 14th General Hospital at Wimereux, France, and died there, aged 24, of his wounds on December 10th 1917. He was buried at Wimereux Communal Cemetery, Pas-de-Calais, France. He, like Timothy, was awarded the 1915 Star as well as the War and Victory Medals.
Arthur is remembered on the Hengate War Memorial, the East Riding Memorial in the Minster and on St Mary’s Church Roll of Honour. His name is also on the Collinson family headstone in St Mary’s Cemetery on New Walk. Arthur’s elder brother, George Collinson (1890-1961) also served in the artillery of the 2nd Northumbrian Brigade in France between 1916 to 1919. Timothy Collinson was demobilised in 1919 and was recorded in the 1939 Register as being a horse trainer.
