Daniel was born in Beverley in 1885 the son of a local (journeyman) baker, Thomas Isaac Cattle who married Maria Redhead in 1879. Maria, died in 1903 and Thomas brought up the family alone. Daniel was brought up on Landress Lane and then 2 Providence Row, (later called Wilbert Terrace), Wilbert Lane. In 1902 he was working as a labourer for Henry Paley in Hull; in 1911 he was a bricklayer's labourer. He served in the 3rd Battalion of the East Yorkshire Regiment, Territorial Reserve, from Nov 1902 to Sep 1903.

Daniel served as a Private in the 7th Battalion of the East Yorkshire Regiment. He was transferred to the 2nd Battalion of the Yorkshire Regiment, who were involved on the Somme in the latter stages of the actions on the Transloy Ridges from the 7 to 20 Oct 1916. On the 18th the 2nd attacked the west end of Bayonet Trench and Bite Trench, Daniel was posted as missing and it wasn't until Aug 1917 that Daniels father was informed of his son's death according to the Beverley Guardian of 18 Aug 1917.

Daniel's body was not recovered and he is remembered on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing on the Somme. He is also remembered on the Hengate War Memorial. He was awarded the War and Victory Medals.
