John Thomas Clayton was born the 11 Dec 1880 in Cherry Burton and baptized the 6 May 1881, the son of John William and Charlotte Clayton (nee Risome). The family lived in Cherry Burton. On 27 Oct 1900 John married Jane Worledge at St John the Baptist Church, Stockton on Tees, Durham. In 1901 the couple were living in Stockton upon Tees, John was working as a a general labourer. By 1902 when their daughter Charlotte was born they had moved to Beverley, their daughter Jessie was born in 1904. On 13 Aug 1906 Jane died aged 28. A month later their son John Thomas died on 25 Aug 1906 just 21 days old. They were both buried at St Mary’s, Beverley. On 6 Oct 1907 John married his wife’s sister Ellen at St Nicholas Church, Beverley. They had six children and lived in Railway Terrace, Trinity Lane, Beverley.
John served with the Army Service Corps. In 1917 he was pictured in the Beverley Guardian as serving in France. He was awarded the British and Victory medals.
