Leslie Watson Chapman was born the 9 Sep 1896 in Beverley and baptized the 11 Oct 1896 in Beverley Minster, the son of Herbert and Betsy Chapman (nee Watson). Herbert worked in the tannery and the family were living in Regent Street, Beverley in 1911. Leslie attended Minster School and the Beverley Wesleyan School. He was a member of the Church Lads Brigade. In 1911 he was working as an apprentice ironmonger.

Leslie enlisted with the 3rd Reserve Northumberland Field Ambulance Corps on 11 Jan 1915. He served in Salonika where he contracted malaria. He was discharged on 6 May 1919 when he was awarded the Silver War Medal, and the British and Victory medals.

On 15 Apr 1922 Leslie married Elizabeth Atkin at St John’s Church, Newland, Hull. He was working as an ironmonger. They had twins in 1923 Allan and Enid, Enid died in 1925 aged 2, son Eric born in 1927, and son John Ewart born in 1931. In 1939 the family were living in Pickering and Leslie was working as a commercial traveler. Elizabeth died in 1945 and Leslie married Enid Berriman in 1965. Leslie died in Scarborough on 14 May 1966, aged 69.
