Tom was born in Beverley on 10 Jul 1898 and baptised on 25 Aug 1898 at St Mary's Church, Beverley, the son of Thomas Edward Charlton and Sarah Ellen (nee Wilson), who married 1896. Thomas' father was a waterman on Beverley Beck but later worked as a ship plater's helper at the Grovehill shipyard. Tom was brought up on Beckside, Holme Church Lane and then at 58 Walkergate and 36 Lairgate. He attended St Mary's school and joined the Beverley Church Lads' Brigade in 1912. On leaving school Tom worked as an errand boy for Bielbys fishmongers, 55 Lairgate, Beverley.
Tom enlisted on 15 Feb 1917, joining the Royal Field Artillery and served as a gunner in France. He was wounded in action. He was awarded the War and Victory medals.
Tom returned to Beverley and in 1925 was living with his widowed mother. He left the Beverley area and in 1933 he married Mabel Asher in the Scunthorpe, their daughter Gloria, was born in 1935 in Leeds. In 1939 Tom was working as hotel door porter and living at World's End, Thirsk. He died in Thirsk aged 101 in 1999. Mabel died in 2004 aged 94.
