Thomas was born in 1893, the son of Henry and Emma Clarke, who married in 1888. In 1901 Henry was working at the gas works as a labourer and the family were living at 6 Chantry Lane, Beverley. By 1911 Thomas, aged 18 was working as a ship yard labourer, and his parents have moved to 2 Clifford Cottages, Walkergate, Beverley. Thomas joined the Church Lads Brigade, but resigned after just over a year in 1911.
Thomas enlisted with the 5th Yorkshire Regiment on 7 Jun 1910, aged 15 years and 7 months. He was 5’ 1” and a plater’s labourer working at Cook, Welton and Gemmell. Thomas arrived in France on 18 Apr 1915, which entitled him to the 1914-1915 Star together with the British and Victory medals. He was transferred from 5th to 9th Yorkshire Regiment.
Thomas returned to Beverley, he didn't marry and was living with his widowed mother at 4 Burton Terrace, off Chantry Lane in 1925, he was at the sameaddress in 1939, but later moved to 97 Flemingate, Beverley. Thomas died 1975 aged 83.
