Charles William Coleman was born in Hull in Jan 1898. He was the only son of Charles William Coleman, a boilermaker, from Buckinghamshire, and Mary Jane (nee Padley), from Birkenhead, Cheshire. In 1901 the family were living in Grimsby. By 1911 they were living in Holme Church Lane, Beverley. In May 1913, aged 16, Charles was employed by the Railway Company as a junior clerk in the Superintendent of the Line’s office at a starting salary of £26 per annum.

Charles aged 19 was living at The Sloop Inn, Beckside, Beverley in May 1915 when he enlisted in the RFA Territorial Reserve. He remained in the UK from that date until he embarked for France in Mar 1916, he served as a Gunner until Sep 1916 when he returned to the UK. Demobilised in Dec 1918, Charles was awarded the British War and Victory medals.

Charles returned to his employment with the Railway Company. He did not marry and he died in Raywell Sanatorium in Dec 1927, aged 29.
