Leading seaman Edgar Chadwick was born on 31 Aug 1895 in North Frodingham near Driffield. He was baptised 29 Sep 1895 at St Elgin church. His parents were William J and Maud Chadwick, his siblings were William Henry, Percy James, George, Emma and Mary. In 1911 Edgar was a single man and was employed as a farm worker.
Edgar enrolled in the Royal Navy on 19 Dec 1911, his first ship being the Ganges. He served as a warrant officer up to June 1924. In 1916 Edgar served on the Cornwallis, on the 9 Jan 1917, the Cornwallis was hit on her starboard side by a torpedo from a German submarine. Fifteen men were killed in the explosions but the rest of the crew, including Edgar were rescued before the ship sank. Edgar was awarded the Star, Victory and the British medals.
There is a marriage of Edgar Chadwick to Mary Durtnal in 1920 in Medway district and a death and probate for a Edgar Chadwick on 18 Feb 1954 in Rainham, Kent.
