Description | Work completed by volunteer includes the following information:
William Robert Coneyworth was born 1893 in Beverley, the only son of Robert and Jane. His father was a labourer for the corporation and in 1911 they lived in Tindall Lane, which had also been the home of his grandparents. William Robert was an apprentice printer (compositor) before the war, and the 1901 census shows a printer’s shop on Tindall Lane. Following discharge from the army he continued this occupation at the Hull Daily Mail.
William enlisted in the Yorkshire Regiment and as part of the Labour Corp, his regimental number on enlisting was 1214, but changed after he was promoted to Corporal to 632492. The Labour Corp served in France and all three campaign medals awarded to William are in the Yorkshire Regiment Museum in York.
Williams photograph appeared in the Beverley Guardian Feb 1917 along with his brother in law Gunner Frederick Peck. His cousin Robert Coneyworth, also of Tindall Lane, served in the same Regiment and Corp as William. In 1914 William married Keziah May Peck and following discharge from the army they continued to live in Beverley and raised a large family. William died in 1953 and Keziah in 1964.
