Henry Cooper Carling known as Harry Carling was born in Driffield in 1894. His father was a tailor, in beverley. In 1911 Harry was an apprentice tailor.
Harry enlisted in Hull on 14 Nov 1914 in the 1/3 (reserve) Northumberland Field Ambulance and served with the Expeditionary Force. According to his pension records he served for a total of 4 years and 211 days. Three years and 194 days of this were abroad with the British Expeditionary Force. He had one furlough home in 1917
In 1919 the registrar of the 2nd London General Hospital declared him to be unlikely to be fit for service overseas. His pension records state that he had a corneal nebula of the left eye and was unfit, with general debility. His degree of disability was 50%. On 31 May 1919 Harry was granted the Silver War badge. Harry left the army on 11 Jun 1919, he was awarded the 1914, British war medal and Victory medal.
Harry married Fannie Wright, daughter of Joseph William and Mary Wright on 1 Sep 1921 at St Nicholas Church Beverley. They had twin girls, Renee and Joyce born in 1923. Harry died aged 65 in 1959.
