Tom Coates was born in Beverley on 21 Dec 1891, the son of Tom Coates and Annie Jane Coates. Tom senior was from Beverley but Annie came from Stockton and had been widowed before marrying Tom in Beverley Minster in 1883. They had a total of fourteen children, only twelve of whom survived childhood.

Tom became a tanners’ labourer. On 14 Mar 1914 he married Laura Jane Long at Beverley Minster. Laura was born in 1889, the daughter of a joiner. The couple lived at 48 Trinity Lane, Beverley. Their first son, Benjamin, was born in 1914.

Tom’s photograph appeared in the Beverley Guardian of 6 Jun 1917He served in various battalions of the Northumberland Fusiliers as a private, he was awarded the War and Victory medals.

After the war Tom resumed work as a tanners’ labourer. He and Laura had four more children: Winifred born 1918; Herbert born 1920; Ernest born 1927 and Sydney born 1936. The family continued to live at 48 Trinity Lane. Tom died in 1971 and Laura died in Hull in 1975.
