DescriptionWork completed by volunteer includes the following information:

Edward Cross (also known as Edwin Cross) was born in Beverley in 1893, the only son of Charles Edwin Cross and Harriet Cross (nee Atkinson) of Beverley. He had three sisters, Louisa Albert born 1889; Tamar born 1890; and Agnes born 1891. Charles is recorded as a glue and gelatine maker in the 1901 census and a tanner’s labourer in 1911. The family home in 1901 was in Chantry Lane, and later in Trinity Lane.

During the war Edward served in the newly formed Machine Gun Corps. According to the Beverley Guardian of 10 Mar 1917 he had already spent six months in France. He was promoted to corporal and spent the period 1917-19 as acting sergeant whilst working as an instructor in the MGC. He left the army on 7 Mar 1919 and was awarded the War and Victory Medals.

Whilst on leave he married Olive Arabella Cowdrey on 20 Jun 1917 at St James’ Church, Hull. Olive, born 1890, was the daughter of Robert Cowdrey, a master mariner, originally from Lowestoft. Olive had been in domestic service. The couple had three children: Joan born 1922, Betty born 1924 and Hedley born 1926. Hedley served in the Royal Navy in World War 2 and was lost at sea when HMS Hussar sank in 1944. Edward and Olive lived in Scarborough Street, Hull. Edward’s occupation is unknown. He died on 4 Jan 1934. A service was held at Hull Crematorium two days later.
