David Calvert was born in Beverley on 31 Jul 1894 and baptised at St Mary’s Church on 4 Nov of that year. He was one of five sons born to Abraham and Sarah Calvert. Abraham Calvert worked as a joiner.The family lived in Wood Lane, Norwood and then 31 Wilbert Lane, Beverley. After leaving school, David was appointed an assistant postman in 1910.
He joined the 1st/ 8th Battalion of the London Regiment on 4 Feb 1917 as a rifleman. The 8th were known as the Post Office Rifles and David served with them until 21 May 1917, when he received serious but unspecified wounds. He rejoined the London Regiment on 20 Dec of that year, serving in the 17th Battalion. He left them on 27 Aug 1918. He was awarded the War and Victory medals
David married in Howden in 1916. His wife Charlotte Annie Brown, born in the Hemingbrough area in 1897 was a dairymaid. After the war the couple spent a number of years living in the Howden area; their two children, Edward born 1916, and Joan born 1920. David returned to work for the GPO and was promoted to full postman status in Beverley in 1933. The family was living in Pighill Lane in 1939 but later moved to33 Woodhall Way, Molescroft. David died in Beverley the 8 Aug 1957; Charlotte lived until 1984
