John Camplin was born in Hull in 1885 and was baptised 5 Dec 1888 at St Stephens Church, Hull. He was the eldest son of John Henry and Eliza Jane Camplin (nee Smith). His father was a shipwright and he had 7 siblings.

John joined the East Yorkshire Regiment in 1908, he married Constance Kilpatrick in 1914. Constance was daughter of Colour Sergeant James Kilpatrick of Beverley. They had a son Terence born in Beverley on 20 Mar 1914.

Private John Henry Camplin was killed in action in Ypres on 21 Sep 1915. He was serving with the 1st Battalion of the East Yorkshire regiment. He had embarked for France in 1914 and only three weeks before his death spent some time at home with his family in Beverley. He is remembered with honour at White House cemetery St Jean-Les-Ypres. He was awarded the 14 Star, the British and Victory medals.
