Albert Curtis was born in Bishop Burton 18 Oct 1890. He lived with his parents John and Mercy Curtis and 7 siblings Edith Ann, Harold, Sarah Jane, John William, Ada, Dora Elizabeth, and Hilda in a cottage in Bishop Burton. His father was a shepherd and Albert was employed as a farm labourer. In 1914 Albert was recommended to join the East Riding Constabulary by the vicar of Bishop Burton, at the time he was employed by H R Pease as a woodman. He served briefly as a police officer before enlisting in the army in 1915.
Albert joined the Seaforth Highlanders, his regiment landed in Boulogne in Jul 1915 and was involved in the Battles of the Somme in 1916. Albert died 22 Jun 1916. His death was reported in the Beverley Guardian 8 Jul 1916, he was awarded the British War Medal, Victory Medal and 1915 Star and is buried in the Vermelles British Cemetery, Calais, France.
Albert Curtis is commemorated on the new plaque situated near Bishop Burton Pond erected in 2014 to commemorate the centenary of the Great War
