Charles was born in Beverley 20 Oct 1895. His parents were Charles and Ellen nee Nutchey. Charles senior was a horse trainer/dealer born in Malton. The 1901 Census records Ellen as living with the family at Royston Hertfordshire. The family members were Harold, Tom, Roland and Charles. At the time Charles senior was listed as a visitor, a horse trainer, in Wisbech St Peter. By 1911 the family had returned to Beverley and were living at 6 Willow Grove, Charles was 15 and attending school. He had been admitted to Beverley Wesleyan School in 1904.
Charles was a private in the East Riding of Yorkshire Imperial Yeomanry, his service number 121042. He was later transferred to the Machine Gun Corps having entered active service on 10 Nov 1915. Charles was awarded the Victory Medal, British War Medal and 15 Star.
Charles married in Dec 1922 in Aston, Birmingham and died in Birminham in 1973. His brothers Harold and Tom also served in the Army and survived.
