James Charles Cook, born 1892 in Beverley, the eldest of nine children born to John Pearson Cook and his wife Elizabeth. In 1911 James, aged 18 and his father were employed as shipyard labourers.

James was a Private with the 1st Battalion of the East Yorkshire Regiment and embarked for the front in Sep 1914, only five weeks after war was declared. The 1st Battalion of the East Yorkshire Regiment landed at St Nazaire and engaged in various actions on the Western Front, including actions on the Aisne Heights during 1914 and action at Hooge during 1915. In Nov 1915 the Battalion was transferred to the 64th Brigade of the 21st Division. James, having been wounded, was transferred to the 14th General Hospital in Boulogne, where he was later reported to have died of wounds on 20 Jan 1916, he is buried in the Wimereux Communal Cemetery, James was 24 years old.
