Corporal William Clubley was born Apr 1897, the second son of Thomas and Frances Clubley. He had sisters Annie, Francis and Julia, and a brother John. In 1911 the family were living on Norwood and William aged 14 was a baker`s errand boy.

William volunteered for war in 1915 and joined the 6th Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment who embarked for the Dardenelles towards the end of Jun 1915. They sailed on the `Frankonia` accompanied by two destroyers, passing Gibraltar and Malta before disembarking at Alexandria. On 6 Aug 1915 aboard motor lighters each holding 500 men, christened beetles by the troops, they approached Sulva Bay. They immediately came under heavy attack and William, aged 19, was killed during the landing. He was reported missing in the Snapper (the East Yorkshire Regiments monthly magazine) in Oct 1915 and as killed in action in the Beverley Guardian of 23 Sep 1915.

He has no known grave and is remembered on the Helles memorial, Gallipoli. He is also remembered in the chapel on Toll Gavel, Roll of Honour, the Holme Church Lane street shrine, on the East Yorkshire Regiment Memorial in Beverley Minster and on the Beverley War Memorial, Hengate
