Description | Work completed by volunteer includes the following information:
Herbert George Chapman was born in Beverley in 1895, the son of George Robert Chapman, a bricklayer, and his wife Mary Hannah, nee Squires. In 1901 the family lived at 21 Sloe Lane and a younger brother Leonard was born 1903. By 1911 they had moved to 11 Minster Moorgate and sixteen-year-old Herbert was joiner's apprentice. Later, and before Nov 1916, they moved to 84 Minster Moorgate.
Herbert George Chapman joined the Royal Engineers. The Beverley Guardian 11 Nov 1916 published a photograph of Sapper H Chapman, 84 Minster Moorgate which was captioned: 'At the Front'. Several Herbert Chapmans enlisted in the Royal Engineers and a process of elimination narrows the number down to two men, namely: 101524 Sapper Herbert George Chapman and 164415 Sapper Herbert George Chapman, although it is difficult to say with certainty that either is Herbert George Chapman of Beverley.
Herbert survived the War and on 21 Apr 1919 he was admitted to the Amalgamated Society of Carpenters, Cabinetmakers and Joiners. On 28 May 1919 he transferred to the Southport, Lancashire branch of that trade union. In 1922 in the Ormskirk area Herbert George Chapman married Lena Wareing, daughter of David Wareing, joiner and builder and his wife Ellen nee Gregson. Herbert and Lena returned to live in Beverley where they had two daughters, Mary J born 1925 and Nora D born Christmas Eve 1926. Herbert George Chapman of 84 Minster Moorgate died 23 Jan 1958, aged 62 years. The funeral service was held in Beverley Minster and his body was cremated. Lena Chapman died in 1983
