John Chapman spent his early life in Beverley but then emigrated to Canada and served in the Canadian forces during the war. He retained links with his relatives in Beverley.
John Chapman was born in Cottingham 25 Sep 1878. His family lived in Driffield, and moved to Beverley, residing in Sloe Lane and Lairgate. His father was Robert Chapman of Lyng, Norfolk and his mother was Emma Chapman (nee Taylor) of Cottingham. His father was a bricklayer, as was John's older brother George. He had three sisters, Elizabeth, Mary and Frances. John married Florence Elisabeth of Beverley at the turn of the century and in 1901 they were living in Sloe Lane, Beverley. Their only child, Frances Emma was born in 1902. John worked as a carpenter/joiner. They emigrated to Canada in 1904, settling in Winnipeg, Manitoba. John is described as a "cabinet maker" in the census of 1916.
John enlisted in the Canadian Over-Seas Expeditionary Force 10 Mar 1915. His attestation papers indicate that he was serving as a sergeant in the 18th Company of the Canadian Army Service Corps militia. The papers refer to his new unit, the 4th Field Ambulance. He served in France and won the 1914-15 Star, the ASC was a supply/logistics organisation that did not serve on the frontline. He may have returned to Canada as he features in the 1916 census for Winnipeg. He left the army in 1919 and spent the rest of his life in Canada.
