Born in Beverley in 1892 George was the youngest of eight children born to Bernard Hargrave Casserley, a printer, born in Ireland, and Mary, born in Syleham, Suffolk. Bernard and Mary married in Beverley in 1873, the family lived in Well Lane. When George was just five months old his father died but the family continued to live at 10 Well Lane, Beverley. In 1911 George, aged 19, was living with his mother and one of his older brothers, Charles, both employed as tanner's labourers. At the age of 22 George married Eliza Blyth, daughter of Robert and Mary Blyth of Walkergate, living at 15 Well Lane, Beverley, their daughter Kathleen Mary was born in Dec 1914.

George's Medal Card and Rolls show he enlisted in the East Yorkshire Regiment (T), on 14 Jan 1915. He was later transferred to the Labour Corps. A report in the Beverley Guardian in Sep 1916 stated that he had been wounded and was 'in hospital in France' but no further details were given. He was awarded a Silver War Badge and discharged in Oct 1917 because of wounds received. He was also awarded the British War and Victory medals.

The 1939 Register shows George, still living at 15 Well Lane, and employed at the Tanyard, working as a labourer in the Extract Factory. His daughter Kathleen married in 1937, and in 1941 George and Eliza became grandparents. George died in 1950. Eliza who died aged 82, in 1973.
