Fred Nicholson was born on the 12 Nov 1896 at Hull Bridge Road, Beverley, the son of Levi and Jane Ann Nicholson, nee Hall. After leaving school he worked as a ship builder’s labourer.
During the First World War Fred enlisted with the 5th Battalion of the Yorkshire Regiment commonly known as the Beverley Terriers. He later became attached to the Kings Own Light Infantry. In 1916 he received a gun wound to his right hand and was discharged from the army on the 15 Oct 1917. He was awarded the British and Victory medal.
After the war Fred returned to the shipbuilding trade and worked as a ship’s boiler maker. On 23 Aug 1919 he married Olive Victoria Thomson at Sculcoates Register office. They had eight children and lived in Beverley.
Fred died on 5 Mar 1971 in Beverley aged 74. He is buried at Queensgate Cemetery, Beverley.
