Levi Nicholson was born in 1886 in Beverley the eldest son of Levi and Jane Ann Nicholson, nee Hall. After leaving school he worked as a painter for the East Yorkshire and Crosskill’s Cart and Waggon Company. At the age of eighteen on 1 Apr 1905, he enlisted with the Second Battalion of the East Yorkshire Regiment and served as a private. In 1906 he was transferred to India with the Lucknow Division and served in Maymoyo and Fyzabad. In April 1913 the company moved to the hills of Kailana.
Levi died of appendicitis at Kailana, India on 12 May 1913 whilst serving with the 8th Lucknow Division of the East Yorkshire Regiment. He was 27 years old and according to a report in the Beverley and East Riding Recorder of 24 May 1913, was only a few months off terminating his nine years’ service.
