George Sydney Atkinson was born 22 Jan 1894 at Holmes House, South Duffield., the son of William Peter and Elizabeth Ann Atkinson, nee Watson. He worked as a farm labourer before emigrating to Canada, to join his older sister Annie and brother Francis. He sailed from Liverpool on the “Victoria” arriving in Quebec 27 Jun 1913.
He joined the Canadian Over-Seas Expeditionary Force on 12 Jan 1915 in Red Deer, Alberta, and was in France with the 2nd Canadian Mounted Rifles in 1916.
He was killed at Courcelette on 9 Oct 1916. He is remembered on the Vimy Memorial, Pas de Calais, France.
