John (Evans) Waldron was born in Beverley in 1881 to unknown parents. In the 1891 census he was described as “a homeless boy” and was residing at the St Vincent (Orphan) Home for Boys at 12 Wright Street, Hull. By 1901 he was working on a farm at Hull Bank, Dunswell, as a cattleman. On 17 Oct 1909 John married Edith Carr Forth at St Mary’s Church, Beverley. They lived at 36 Norwood Grove (with Edith’s parents) but during the war they moved to 14 Tiger Lane, Beverley. Their children Phyllis Maud was born 1910 and Charlotte M M was born 1913. John was now a carrier (carter) and in the 1911 census was described s a “bricklayer’s cartman”.
John became a private in the Royal Army Veterinary Corps who were responsible for the medical care of animals used by the British Army such as horses, mules and pigeons. The RAVC had six Base Hospitals in France as well as Mobile Veterinary Sections attached to each Division in the field. John’s photograph in the Beverley Guardian in Oct 1917 notes he was serving in the latter, in a “Field Veterinary Hospital”. He was awarded the War and Victory Medals.
John returned to Beverley and lived in the town until at least 1925, the family, now with the a third child, John A born 1922, moved by 1939 to 14 Eppleworth Road. Edith died in 1942 and John died in 1960 aged 78.
