DescriptionWork completed by volunteer includes the following information:

Walter Wilde was born on 22 Nov 1893 in Hull, the son of Thomas Whitworth Wilde and Julia, nee Harrison. They lived in Botanic Avenue, Hull but in the early 1890s moved to Beverley, living in Wilbert Grove. In 1911 Walter was working as a clerk. When he married in 1915 Walter was described as a gas account collector, he married Mabel Wingate on the 2 Aug 1915 at Welwick Parish Church. They moved to the Patrington/Welwick area where their first child Eric was born in 1916.

The Beverley Guardian in Jan 1918 carried Walters photograph stating he was a private in the East Yorkshire Regiment. The paper also noted he had been wounded in France and was currently in a Canadian Contingent hospital there. The nature of the wounds and their origin is not mentioned in the paper.

Walter returned to Holderness and in 1939 he was still working as a gas meter inspector. His father’s probate in 1929 does however refer to Walter being a “grocer”. He and Mabel had two further children, Olga born 1920 and Gordon born 1925. Walter died in Hull in 1975.
