Description | Work completed by volunteer includes the following information:
The Beverley Guardian of the 6 May 1916 reported that Driver John Williamson of the Royal Field Artillery was serving in France. There were 48 John Williamsons in the Royal Field Artillery during the Great War, of which fifteen were Drivers and the Service records of most of them have not survived, it has not been possible to identify the correct records for John.
The Royal Field Artillery used horse-drawn limbers to transport heavier calibre weapons than the Royal Horse Artillery, that is, medium calibre guns (18-pounders) and (4.5-inch) howitzers . Drivers sat on the limber while handling the horses. Each team would be responsible for the care and well-being of their horses.
John William Williamson was born in Beverley the 28 Jun 1894, the son of Robert Williamson and Ada Wilson. He was one of seven children. John survived the War and on 25 Oct 1924 he married Frances Mary Liddell Wilkinson at St Andrew's Church, Drypool, Hull. They made their home in Beverley where they had three children, John born 1925, and twins Barbara and Doris born 1928. The family lived at Riding Fields Square, Beverley in 1939 and John was employed as a shipyard plater's labourer.
