George Wooll was the 8th of 11 children born to Robert and Jane Wooll (nee Potter), he was baptised the 3 Mar 1875 at St Margaret’s church, Beswick.

George joined the Northumberland Fusiliers around 1892 and served for 21 years, 17 of which were overseas, in Sudan, Crete, South Africa and India. Whilst in Bengal, India George married Grace Emily Newton on 6 Nov 1907 at Dum Dum, Bengal and they had at least three children, two dying in infancy. He retired from military service and returned home about 1913, but re-joined the Northumberland Fusiliers on 19 Aug 1914. He had the distinction of being promoted from Private to Warrant Officer in one day. He was killed a year later and is buried at Helles Memorial, Gallipoli Peninsula, Turkey. In his will he left effects totalling £616 11s 6d with his wife as executor
