Arthur Frederick Woodthorpe was born in Beverley the son of John Edward Woodthorpe and Isabella, they lived in St Andrew Street, Beverley. Before his marriage to Isabella John had been a regular soldier. Arthur Frederick was born in Jun 1898. In Oct 1914, at the age of 16 years 4 months he enlisted in the Yorkshire Regiment.
Arthurs Medal Card shows he also served with the KOYLI and the Royal Engineers. In Sep 1916, a letter from Arthur was published in the Beverley Guardian, by this time he was with the KOYLI and wrote home to say he had been wounded in the battle of the Somme. Arthur was wounded in the face, left leg and right foot but said that he was going on well. He was in Queen Mary's Hospital, Whalley, Lancashire. He was discharged from the service on 21 Dec 1918. Arthur was awarded the British War and Victory Medals and he also qualified for a Silver War Badge.
Arthur returned to Beverley and towards the end of 1919, married Edith Tomlinson, they lived in Walkergate, Beverley, and had four children. In 1939 Arthur worked as a Public Works Contractors labourer, he and Edith lived in Bartlett Avenue, Beverley. Edith died in 1979, aged 83, and Arthur was 95 when he died in Feb 1994.
