Hernbert William was born in Beverley, the son of John Edward Woodthorpe and Isabella, the family lived in St Andrew Street, Beverley. Before his marriage to Isabella, John had been a regular soldier. Herbert was born in 1896, in 1911 aged 15 he was working as a horseman on a farm in Goodmanham.

Herbert enlisted in the Royal Field Artillery, his Medal Card shows that he embarked for France on 29 Oct 1915. He was awarded the British War and Victory Medals and the 15 Star. He survived the war and on 8 Dec 1919 he joined the Hull City Police Force.
In 1924 he married Edith Lacotta (nee Dunn) originally from Anlaby. Edith had previously been married to Johannes Lacotta, they married in Dresden, Germany. In 1911 they were living in Hull where Johannes was working as a waiter in a hotel. Edith and Johannes had two children. There is evidence that Johannes returned to Germany and served in a German Infantry Regiment, they divorced and he later remarried.

The 1939 Register shows Herbert and Edith living at 14 Hardy Street, Hull, and in 1942 he was granted probate for the effects of his brother, Thias, who was killed in an accident on Drypool Bridge. In 1945 he retired with a pension from the Police, Edith died in 1971. Herbert died in Mar 1975, aged 79.
