Thias Rennard was born in Beverley in 1893 the son of John Edward Woodthorpe and Isabella, the family lived in St Andrew Street, Beverley. Before his marriage to Isabella, John was a regular soldier. In 1911 Thias aged 17 was working as a Waggoner on a farm at Eske, near Tickton.

Thias enlisted in the Royal Field Artillery and embarked for France on 25 Jul 1915. His Medal card and Medal Rolls show he was awarded the British War and Victory medals and the 15 Star. The Electoral registers from 1925 through to 1931 show he was living in Hull, the 1939 Register lists him as 'single', living at 1 Dover Street, Hull, working as a 'Rullyman, Heavy Work'.

Thias died in 1942 in Hull Royal Infirmary as the result of an accident involving a motor lorry, which had a mechanical failure, and the horse-drawn rully that he was driving. An inquest report was published in the Hull Daily Mail 5 Mar 1942.

"The adjourned inquest on Thias Reynard Woodthorpe (49), drayman of 21, Victoria Avenue, Hull, who was injured in an accident on Drypool Bridge, on Tuesday afternoon, January 27, was held yesterday. Evidence was given that Woodthorpe was in charge of a horse-drawn rully, and in crossing the bridge, a collision took place with a motor lorry. Woodthorpe was trapped and his rully was lifted in order to release him" "The Coroner ……. Returned a verdict of "Accidental Death".
Probate was granted to his brother, Herbert William Woodthorpe, Police Constable.
