John Stanley Wood served with 203rd Heavy Battery of the Royal Garrison Artillery, part of 25th and later 52nd Heavy Artillery Group in 5th Army. The Beverley Guardian of 8 Feb 1919 states he was twice wounded but no further information was given. The 203rd went to France in Jan 1917 and it is likely that Stanley had joined up in 1915/16. Stanley was awarded the War and Victory Medals.
Stanley was born in Beverley the 4 May 1895, the son of Wallis Wood, born in Etton in 1858, a Sergenat in the Beverley Borough Police, he married Alice Jane Holland, in 1887. Until 1910 John Stanley was a pupil at Norwood Infants School and then became a Telegraph Messenger boy for the GPO. The family home was on Norwood.
On his return from the war John Stanley lived with his mother at 80 Norwood. In the 1939 Register he was a shipping clerk. In Dec 1935 he married Agnes Mary Ranson, born in 1899, of Priory Road, Beverley, whose father was a tailor. They lived at 80 Norwood up to the time of John Stanley’s death on 4 Jun 1957. Agnes died in Beverley in 1987.
John Stanley is remembered today on the Norwood Street Shrine with two of his brothers who also served.
