JOhn Edward Wood was born in Barbados on 29 Jan 1892 the son of Colour Sergeant Joe Wood of the West Yorkshire Regiment, and his wife Ettie Amelia (nee Daubin) from Nova Scotia, Canada. He had two sisters Louisa, born 1894 and Cassie born 1896. He was educated at the Duke of York's Royal Military School, Chelsea, London; the school’s primary purpose was to educate the children and orphans of British servicemen.
John enlisted in the Band of the East Yorkshire Regiment in 1906, and in 1911 he was stationed at Aldershot Amy barracks. He served with Expeditionary Force in France and Flanders from Aug 1914, and was awarded the DCM on 30 Jun 1915 "for conspicuous and consistent zeal and devotion to duty displayed as a platoon commander" this was reported in the London Gazette, and the Beverley Guardian. He was killed in action at Hooge on 9 Aug 1915; his memorial is at Menin Gate Ypres, Belgium.
