Robert Hornsey Woffinden was born 1 Apr 1896 in Goole, the son of George, a plate layer on the railways, and Mary Elizabeth Woffinden. He was baptized at Goole Chapel on 21 Apr 1896. By 1911 the family was living in Beverley and George was a gardener in a nursery.

On 10 Dec 1915 Robert enlisted with the East Yorkshire regiment at the age of 19, by Jun 1916 he had embarked for France to join the 10th Battalion. Robert was killed in action on 22 Sep 1916, aged 20. He is buried at St Vaast Post Military Cemetery, France.

The Woffinden family suffered a second loss two days later when Robert’s younger brother James Thomas was killed in action on 25 Sep 1916 whilst serving with the East Yorkshire Regiment in the Battle of Morval. He is remembered on the Thiepval Memorial. Both brothers are remembered on the Hengate Memorial and the East Yorkshire Regiment Memorial in Beverley Minster.
