Ernest Wise was the son of James and Eliza Wise of Woodmansey near Beverley. James was born in Arram, Atwick and was employed as a farm labourer. Eliza (nee Elvidge) was born in Beverley. Ernest was born in 1895 in Anlaby. Before joining the Army in 1915 he was employed as a farm servant. Ernest enlisted in the East Yorkshire Regiment on 7 May 1915 and in Sep 1915 saw active service in the Balkans until 19 and 20 Dec 1915 when the Division was withdrawn from Gallipoli, moving to Imbros then to Egypt at the end of Jan 1916. They concentrated at Sidi Bishr and took over a section of the Suez Canal defences. On 17 Jun 1916 the Division was ordered to France to reinforce Third Army on the Somme.
Ernest was among those who embarked from Alexandria on 5 Jul 1916, landing at Marseilles on 9 Jul and by 27 Jul they were in the front line on the Somme. On 26 Sep 1916 Ernest suffered a gunshot wound to the head and died of his wounds on 28 Sep 1916. His death was reported in the Beverley Guardian on 21 Oct 1916.
He is remembered in the Pozieres British Cemetery, Ovillers-La Boisselle, and is buried there in grave reference I J 15. His name also appears on the Woodmansey War Memorial.
