Arthur Herbert Wilson was born in Beverley in 1898, the son of John Wilson and Martha Jane (nee Witty). By 1901 the family were living in Pape's Yard, Keldgate where John was a boot and shoemaker, a profession he carried on when the family moved to 10 St Andrew Street.
Arthur enlisted in the Duke of Wellington's West Riding Regiment as private 242796. He was awarded the British War and Victory Medals. His brothers Harold and John William also served, in respectively, the West Yorkshire Regiment and the East Riding Regiment.
Arthur later worked at Hodgson tannery as a manager. He married Lilian Windle on 20 Jul 1927 at Beverley Minster. Arthur died on 27 Aug 1827 on a railway line near Scarborough. An inquest returned the verdict of suicide whilst temporarily insane. He was 28 years old.
