Ernest Walker was born in 1893 the son of Thomas and Harriet Walker. Thomas was born in Hatfield, Thorne and married Harriet Pearson in Hutton Cranswick in 1866. They family moved to Rosedale where Thomas worked as a miner. By 1891 the family were living in Crown Terrace, Grayburn Lane, Beverley. Harriet died in 1893 and was buried at Bishop Burton on the 12 Jul 1893. Thomas married Selina Smith in October 1894 at the Baptist Chapel in Bishop Burton. By 1911 Ernest aged 17 was working at the shipyard in Beverley
Ernest's photograph appeared in the Beverley Guardian on 2 Sep 1916 with the caption Pte E Walker, Yorkshire Regiment, son of Mr and Mrs Walker of Wood Lane, Beverley.
There are medal cards for three Ernest Walkers serving with the Yorkshire Regiment. All were awarded the British and Victory medals and all were transferred to other Regiments at some point during the war. All three came home. Unfortunately none of their service records have survived and there are no further details of their army service.
The service record of brother Fred has survived and tells the story that Fred who served with the East Yorkshire Regiment, was shot through his right temple and lost his right eye. Married and the father of twins, he was awarded a Silver War Badge but died in 1918.
