Sergeant George Westwood of the East Yorkshire Regiment was born in 1873 in Handsworth, Staffordshire, the son of James and Selina Westwood. He worked as an Iron Turner until the age of 20 when he enlisted in the regular army, serving with the East Yorkshire Regiment for 21 years.For the first three years of his service he was stationed in England, followed by eleven and a half years in India, after which he returned to England for a further seven years. Having completed his 21 years of service, he was discharged in Apr 1914.

In Apr 1911 George married Margaret Kennedy, of Keldgate, Beverley and they had a daughter, Georgina, born in York in 1912.

At the time of his death George was serving with the 6th Battalion of the East Yorkshire Regiment having re-enlisted when the Battalion was formed in Beverley on 27 Aug 1914. The Battalion embarked for Gallipoli on 1 Jul 1915, and landed at Suvla Bay on 7 Aug 1915. George was killed the 9 Aug 1915, aged 43. He has no known grave but is commemorated on the Helles Memorial at Gallipoli, Canakkale, Turkey.
