Tom Welburn joined the army on 21 Aug 1914, aged 15 and was thus underage. He enlisted at the same time as his older brother Walter in the 5th Battalion of the Yorkshire Regiment, the Green Howards. He was Private T Welburn. After basic training, he arrived in France on 18 Apr 1915 and was immediately involved in the costly actions in the 2nd Battle of Ypres. On 10 Dec 1915 he was transferred to the Royal Engineers and became Sapper Welburn. He was awarded the 1914-15 star and the War and Victory Medals.
Tom was born in Beverley the 29 Apr 1899, the son of William Henry Welburn and Emily (nee Mitchell). William was the caretaker at Beverley High School on Norwood and the family lived there on site. Tom had attended the Spencer Street School, Beverley. He was also a member of the Church Lads Brigade.
He had two older brothers, Ernest and Walter. Ernest served in the in the 3rd Northumbrian Field Ambulance, Royal Army Medical Corps. Tom became a motor engineer/fitter with a business at 22 Norwood, Beverley known as "Barnard and Welburns". He married Barbara Cole in Bridlington in Mar 1934, Tom died in Dec 1948.
