Stanley Welbourn, aged 19, was seriously wounded in action on 15 Sep 1916. He was a Private in the 5th Battalion of the Yorkshire Regiment involved in the attack on the German lines at Flers-Courcelette on the Somme. Stanley received a severe bullet wound to the left hip and leg and was evacuated to hospital in Cardiff. His injuries were sufficiently serious for his left leg to be amputated. On 6 Mar 1918 he was discharged from the army and awarded the Silver War Badge.
Stanley enlisted on 5 Aug 1915 and arrived in France on 7 Nov 1915. He was awarded the 1914-15 Star as well as the War and Victory Medals.
Stanley was born in Beverley in Apr 1897, the son of James Matthew Welbourn, a cabinet maker who worked for J E Elwell and son, and Emma (nee Bowser). The family lived at 68 Norwood Walk and later at 23 Walkergate, Beverley. Stanley worked at Hodgson's Tanyard. In 1918 Stanley married Eva Cockerline at Sculcoates Register Office, Hull, they had two daughters Joan Linda born 1919 and Margaret Denise born 1922. The family lived in the Driffield area and Stanley died in 1966.
